Facebook Gifts

2012-2014

Facebook Gifts was a clumsy attempt at e-commerce by a company desperate to start making money. Users were prompted with a wrapped-present icon to send friends birthday gifts. Aside from gift cards at Starbucks and Target, the gifts were mostly sad kitschy junk such as a mustache pacifier, wireless key finder, or a giant edible gummy bear. One cool feature was that gift givers didn’t need the receiver’s post address, Facebook took care of that.

Sending real gifts to people you barely know is awkward, and users ignored Facebook gifts. It discontinued less than two years after launch.
