Gerber Singles – baby food for adults

1974

Gerber has been in the baby food business since 1927. In the 1970s, the company launched Singles: adult food in baby-food-jars. It seemed like a smart idea: a convenient alternative for single adults who didn’t want to cook. The Gerber Singles failed because the idea of eating Creamed Beef with a spoon out of a small jar was not most people’s idea of a good night in. It might as well have been called “I Live Alone and Eat My Meals From a Jar”. Having a quick, convenient meal at home is one thing, but apparently those sad, lazy loners still had some standards. Who knew?
