Monoski

1980s

The monoski reached its peak in the 1980s before snowboarding became huge. This wide ski, which uses the same bindings as alpine skiing, never really caught on. When snowboards arrived the 1990s, the monoski was sentenced to death, and its two leading manufacturers quickly entered the snowboard market. »The monoski, haha, yes, it was a failure,« says a ski rental operator in Åre, Sweden. »It was so dorky. It could possibly work in powder, but I don’t understand why anyone would use it to ski regular slopes. Though I actually saw three monoskis this year, so maybe it’s making a comeback.«
